Flashback Friday #6 - USC-Notre Dame Rivalry: A Brief History

Tomorrow, the USC Trojans, aka the greatest football program in the world, play against their cupcake rivals, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, in their annual battle for the Jewelled Shillelagh.  Keeping that in mind, I thought today would be a good day to look back on USC's dominance over ND in recent years...

Here's a few quick facts:
-USC has not lost to ND in 7 years.
-USC has outscored ND 284-95 over that span.
-In 2007, USC beat ND 38-0, shutting them out for the first time.
-USC has produced 3 Heisman winners in the last 7 years while ND has 0.
-USC has won 2 national championships and 6 BCS bowl games in the last 7 years.  At the same time, ND gained the record for most consecutive BCS bowl losses.
-USC has more attractive cheerleaders than ND.
-USC fans are way better supporters than ND fans.
-Unlike ND, USC has model student-athletes who are great people on and off the field.
-USC is and will always be the better than Notre Dame in everything they do. Period.

Out of all their recent battles, the 2005 USC vs Notre Dame game in South Bend was by far their most memorable meeting.  Notre Dame tried to pull off a few dumb tactics to try to win the game.  First, they grew the grass extra long to slow down the USC players.  Didn't they realize that their players would be slowed down by it too?  Then they came out in their green jerseys.  Sure the fans went crazy, but later on they would find out that jerseys don't win games, amazing USC athletes do....

The game was a back and forth affair, with Notre Dame taking a three point lead with less then 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter.  They thought they had USC beat, but little did they know that Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush had a special, and I mean SPECIAL, play coming.  After a spectacular throw from Matt Leinart to Dwayne Jarrett, the Trojans got close to the goal line, but were stopped with only 7 seconds left to go.  The not-so-bright ND fans rushed the field thinking that the clock had run out and that the game was over.  Hahaha it wasn't!  Rather than going for the tying field goal, USC brought out a special formation so they could use their unstoppable goal-line play, The Bush Push!  Leinart, with a slight bit of help from Bush, rumbled past the ND defenders and scored the game-winning touchdown, sending the ND fans and players home crying.

Below is video of the final play (full highlights can be found HERE):

Amazing play eh?  Expect USC to continue their winning ways tomorrow.  The domination begins at 12:30 and you can catch it on NBC.

Til the next episode... Peace

Raf
